SMALL businesses across the North-East can secure new contracts if they are more socially responsible, a senior Government aide has said.
Philip N Green, the Prime Minister’s advisor for corporate responsibility, said companies must look at ways of enhancing their standing in the community.
Mr Green is also non-executive chairman of Trading for Good, a not-for-profit digital service urging companies to show their support for charities and communities, help youngsters into work and improve the environment.
He said: “Trading For Good helps small businesses communicate the good work they’re already doing, whether that's sponsoring a local football team or taking on a new apprentice.
“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy.
“They can win contracts by being more socially responsible and it also helps attract and retain the best people.
“We have seen businesses win new customers by being more socially responsible and it can also make companies more attractive to the best graduates who are looking at which firms to work for.”
Kay Allen OBE, Trading for Good founder, added: “We all believe that small businesses are a force for good, but they often go unrecognised.
“Trading for Good is about getting small businesses to improve their reputation and grow their business by highlighting the great work they do in communities.”
