A NORTH-EAST imaging specialist has won a half a million pounds medical detector deal. 

Kromek, of Sedgefield, County Durham, will supply radiation detectors and integrated electronic components which will help healthcare providers identify medical conditions such as osteoporosis at an early stage.

The deal, with an unnamed client, takes the total booking in the fiscal year from this customer to more than £750,000, Koromek said. 

Arnab Basu, the chief executive of Kromek, said: “This latest order from this existing OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) partner builds on an important international relationship as we continue to see growth through expanding our geographic reach, particularly in Asia." 

The company, based at Netpark, is best known for pioneering a scanner that can identify liquids in bottles, including explosives, alcohol and narcotics, without them being opened, in less than 20 seconds.

Its technology is already used by nine UK airports, including Durham Tees Valley, near Darlington, and last month the firm revealed it had been asked to supply airports in Portugal, Cyprus and Belgium, with talks ongoing with airports across Europe.

Dr Basu was been recognised in the New Year Honours for services to regional development and international trade with an MBE.
