A MARINE firm says it will create 40 new jobs after buying the UK's largest harbour crane.

Able UK, which operates Seaton Port at the mouth of the River Tees, near Middlesbrough, says its new Liebherr crane will help it handle more work in the offshore wind and oil and gas sectors.

Bosses say the crane is the first part of a machinery upgrade, and said it help will attract new business to Seaton Port while further boosting plans for a new quay, which could create up to 100 jobs.

The move comes just days after Able secured a contract to dispose of North Sea offshore platforms from the Shell operated Brent Field, which it believes could create another 100 jobs.

Andrew Jacques, Able UK’s managing director, said: “The acquisition of this remarkable equipment underlines our determination to ensure we continue to provide the best possible service to meet the needs of our customers.

“It can lift 208 tonnes and will be able to reach over tall structures like floating semi-sub drilling rigs.”
