A CONSTRUCTION firm employing about 600 North-East workers has secured a £75m rail deal.

Balfour Beatty, which has offices in Middlesbrough, Sunderland and Newcastle, has been awarded a seven-year framework contract from Network Rail.

The deal covers the design and installation of all electrification equipment on rail routes between Manchester and Blackpool and Manchester to Stalybridge, near Oldham.

The company previously helped build the £269m London Olympic Games swimming centre and a Heathrow Airport passenger terminal.

It employs more than 110 construction workers across Newcastle and Sunderland, and has a 50-strong Middlesbrough power distribution team, which works alongside National Grid and Northern Powergrid.
