AN interiors company that was established as a result of a man's passion for woodwork has celebrated its tenth year in business.
Wingates, which is based in Sunderland, was set up after owner Andrew Wingate helped to restore fittings at Newcastle's Tyne Theatre in 1996 and bought some of the woodworking equipment used on the project.
He established a bespoke furniture business - Wingates Limited - in Horden, east Durham. A decade later it employs 14 people, has an annual turnover of £700,000 and is about to open a showroom.
Last year, the business moved into the Rivergreen Industry Centre in the Pallion district of Sunderland, to cater for growing demand for its work. Wingates specialises in custom design and manufacture of furniture and hand-crafted timber fittings.
Mr Wingate, who served an apprenticeship as a cabinet maker, attributes the success of the business to a love of his work and a loyal customer base.
