A NORTH-EAST offshore wind farm, capable of providing power for about 40,000 homes, could play a key role in developing the UK energy industry against global competitors.
The Teesside wind farm, off the coast of Redcar, supplies power to the National Grid, and 21 of its 27 turbines have now been erected, which will each generate about 2.3 megawatts of power.
The offshore wind sector council, which includes Teesside wind farm energy supplier EDF Energy Renewables, the firm behind the wind farm, yesterday met as the Government and industry prepares a report aimed at increasing investment in the UK supply chain.
Chaired by Energy Minister, and former Darlington MP, Michael Fallon, the meeting focused on the offshore wind industry, which is one of 11 sectors where the Government wants to increase growth.
He said: "We have a real chance to lead the world in the offshore wind sector, not least because of our weather.
"I'm determined the Government and industry should work together and make sure the UK makes the most of the opportunity for growth and jobs that this sector presents.
"This first meeting is a step towards realising that objective and by building an enduring partnership between Government and industry, we can set out a clear strategy which encourages the development of the supply chain, and delivers strong benefits to the UK economy."
