RETAILER Sports Direct, headed by Newcastle United owner, Mike Ashley, has launched a new sports news website.

The firm, which earlier this year said it will hit targets of £270m underlying earnings, is now running the Sports Direct News site, with its own team of reporters.

The company continues to benefit from the demise of rival JJB Sports, and bought 20 JJB stores from administrators last year.

It previously revealed total sales had improved 14 per cent to £31.7m in the nine weeks to March 31, with now online sales accounting for 15 per cent of all sports retail sales. Gross profits were up 22.7 per cent to £128.6m.
