THERE can hardly be more contrasting occasions in racing from Royal Ascot to a quiet Wednesday afternoon at Lingfield but it could be a change for the better for Tudor Key.
Under a month ago, Amanda Perrett’s representative was a 100- 1 shot for the Britannia Handicap but put in a wholly respectable effort to finish nine lengths off the winner Fareer.
More crucially, though, he was third home of the small far-side group when much of the pace came down the stands rail.
It will be a smaller field for the EBF Paul Kelleway Memorial Classified Stakes and a tempting mark of 87 for Tudor Key’s all-weather bow.
A gelding that has showed abundant promise all season, this is surely the time he converts potential into prize-money.
Sir Mark Prescott traditionally starts rolling into form as the summer progresses and his Casual Garcia catches the eye in the Weatherby's Bloodstock Insurance Handicap.
On brief inspection of his first run of the season, the portents are not great as he finished tailed off behind the useful Judgethemoment in a handicap at Ascot in May.
But his debuts as a two- and three-year-old were similarly abject, and last term he ended up rattling off three wins.
The two-mile distance appears to be no stumbling block and, as many hardened punters will know, horses must be forgiven the occasional bad run.
The market closer to the time will provide the greatest insight into Casual Garcia’s claims, but the fact the baronet is persevering with him suggests there is more to come.
A 3lb drop in the weights from Ascot is another aspect in his favour.
The stable also field runners at Kempton’s night meeting and have reasonable grounds for optimism with Florentia in the digibet Casino Handicap.
She appeared to struggle to go the pace in three outings over five furlongs as a juvenile and, as a daughter of Medicean, should be far stronger over this seven-furlong trip.
Capricious fare on offer at Uttoxeter, but a small interest on Humbel Ben in division two of the Aspall’s Suffolk Cyder Maiden Hurdle could still yield handsome dividends.
