NEWCASTLE UNITED have rejected Anderlecht’s latest offer for goalkeeper Matz Sels, and the Belgian club claim they are unwilling to return to the table with a new bid.
Anderlecht had initially put together a €6m joint offer for Sels and Chancel Mbemba, but that deal collapsed when Newcastle accepted an offer for Mbemba from Porto.
With Mbemba seemingly heading to Portugal, Anderlecht officials offered €2m for Sels, but the Newcastle hierarchy turned the bid down.
Anderlecht returned with a second offer, but while some potential bonus payments were added to the deal, the Jupiler League side were still only willing to pay €2m up front.
That bid was also turned down, and Anderlecht sporting director Luc Devroe has indicated he will not be increasing his offer.
That leaves Sels, who was left out of Belgium’s final World Cup squad after featuring in Roberto Martinez’s provisional party, in a state of limbo.
The goalkeeper does not feature in Benitez’s plans, with Martin Dubravka, Rob Elliot, Karl Darlow and Freddie Woodman all ahead of him in the pecking order.
