TOMMY WRIGHT has spoken of his delight at securing the signature of pacey left-winger Alex Henshall.
With Josh Gillies moving to South Shields for an undisclosed fee, Wright has wasted no time in recruiting Henshall, a player he had in his squad at the beginning of last season at Nuneaton Town.
The manager says the player is blessed with “electric pace” and has “unfinished business” having not played since leaving Nuneaton midway through last season amid a dispute.
Henshall left Nuneaton not long after Wright became Darlington boss, and has had a chequered career having spent short spells with a number of clubs, including Ipswich, Kilmarnock and Braintree, while he represented England at youth level.
He began his career in the youth system at Manchester City and Wright is convinced of the 24-year-old's ability.
“I am delighted to be reacquainted with another player I have worked with previously,” said the manager after completing his fourth summer signing.
“I worked tirelessly hard to sign Alex for Nuneaton last summer, but a physio misdiagnosed an injury and he was pushed into playing which led to him making his hamstring injury worse.
“He left Nuneaton due to a dispute regarding his treatment, but the club retained his registration preventing him from playing for anyone else.
“I am delighted to have secured his services and we have unfinished business.
“He is a left-footed winger, electric pace, and one of the most technically gifted players I’ve ever come across. He will be a real asset to the club.
“He has also shown great commitment making this deal happen by agreeing to relocate to the area with his girlfriend while they are expecting their first child.”
Henshall played when Nuneaton beat Darlington 2-1 last October, as did fellow new signing Jordan Nicholson.
