With Jack Colback moving from Sunderland to Newcastle, Steph Shaw takes a look at previous direct transfers between the clubs.
Len Shackleton
Moved from Bradford Park Avenue to Newcastle in 1946, spending two years at the club before transferring to Sunderland in 1948.
Stan Anderson
His football career was based completely in the North-East, which included playing for Sunderland and Newcastle, as well as Middlesbrough. He made 402 appearances for Sunderland from 1952-1963, before signing for the local rivals in which he made a further 81 appearances.
David Young
Born in the North East and played for Newcastle from 1969-1973, before transferring to Sunderland, where he played for a year before moving to Millwall.
Alan Brown
The rivals formed Brown’s first two clubs. He signed for Sunderland in 1976 and spent five years on Wearside, before moving to Newcastle for just a year.
Bob Moncur
The Scot made history at Newcastle United, lifting the Fairs Cup in 1969 and captaining the side during 296 appearances. After the 1974 FA Cup final, he transferred to Sunderland, where he played for a further two years.
Tommy Gibb
Another North-East based career, playing for Newcastle, Sunderland and then Hartlepool. His longest spell came at St James’, where he made 199 appearances, before he moved to Sunderland in 1975 and made just ten appearances.
Jeff Clarke
Started at Manchester City, before moving to Sunderland in 1975. He made 181 appearances, scoring six goals, and signed for Newcastle in 1982.
Ron Guthrie
Played 56 league games for Newcastle before joining Sunderland in 1973. The defender scored two goals for Newcastle and one for Sunderland, with a total of 122 appearances for both clubs combined.
Lee Clark
Moved direct to Sunderland in 1997 after making 195 appearances for the Magpies. Returned to Newcastle eight years later from Fulham.
Paul Bracewell
Started at Stoke. Sunderland was his second club, joining in 1983. He moved to Newcastle in 1992, after a return to Sunderland from Everton.
Lionel Perez
Didn’t make an appearance for Newcastle in goal and went on loan to Scunthorpe and Cambridge during his time on Tyneside, after moving from Sunderland in 1998.
Steven Caldwell
His first professional deal was at Newcastle in 1998. After 28 appearances, Caldwell was released on loan to various clubs but moved to Sunderland in 2004.
Robbie Elliott
The last player to make a straight transfer between the two clubs. Joined Newcastle in 1991 and transferred to Bolton six years later, but returned in 2001. Signed for Sunderland in 2006 and played for a year before moving to Leeds United and then Hartlepool United.
