A 41-YEAR-OLD man suffered multiple injuries after a two-car collision near Guisborough.
The incident occurred around 12.30pm on Monday and led to the A171 being closed by police.
"A 41-year-old man had sustained multiple serious injuries. He was anaesthetised on scene by the Great North Air Ambulance Service's doctor-led trauma team," said a GNAAS spokesman.
"He was also given a blood transfusion. He was then transferred to James Cook University Hospital by road, with the North East Ambulance Service, due to the proximity from the scene."
Both carriageways of the A171 were shut between the Poole and Windlebridge roundabouts following the crash, which involved a silver Vauxhall Corsa, in which the badly injured man was, and a white Mercedes near the Cross Keys pub.
The driver of the Mercedes was not seriously injured, but was shaken by the collision.
Police officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances and witnesses are asked to call police on the non-emergency number 101.
