REDCAR MP Anna Turley has cancelled a surgery and called in the police after receiving a threat.

The Labour politician tweeted this morning about the incident saying she would not jeopardise the safety of her staff or constituents.

However, it is understood it does not relate to the recent Parliamentary vote to bomb IS targets in Syria.

While she did not go into detail she later tweeted: "It is actually an ongoing local issue although those concerned not constituents. Seems acceptable course of action now sadly."

The surgery was due to take place on Friday.

Ms Turley is the Shadow Minister for Civil Society and a leading voice in the ill-fated campaign to save the SSI steelworks.

People took to social media to comment on Ms Turley's announcement.

Mark Hemingway wrote: "The people of Redcar have lost their steelworks and now they can't speak to their MP - it's very grim in the north-east."

While Lynn McCormick, from Saltburn, wrote: "Absolutely shocking! Whoever made the threat should be locked up!"

Helen Anderson wrote: "How awful. Democracy depends on people being able to speak with their elected representatives. But your safety is a priority."

Nigel Beevis ‏wrote in support of Ms Turley: "Your reaction is understandable Anna, but try not to let the keyboard warrior's intimidate you or your staff. Keep smiling Anna."
