A DEVOUT Christian will today (Friday, November 8) declare: “It is finished”, on completing a three-year mission to tweet the Bible.
Chris Juby started condensing one Bible chapter per day into less than 140 characters, the maximum allowed for a single entry on the social networking website Twitter, back in August 2010.
Today, 1,189 days later, he will finally reach Revelation 22, summarising it as: “The river of life flows from the throne of God. ‘Behold I am coming soon. I am the beginning and the end’. Amen. Come Lord Jesus!”
He said: “It’s amazing to complete the journey. So much has happened in the last three years.
“My own story now feels very bound up with the story of the Scripture.
“And that’s how it’s supposed to be. The Bible is not supposed to be set apart from there. It’s there in the midst of the highs and lows.”
Mr Juby’s project made headlines around the world at its outset and his Twitter feed, biblesummary, has attracted more than 29,000 followers, dwarfing his expectation of 200.
Over the three-year effort, the King’s Church Durham director of worship has become a father twice over and travelled widely, but never missed a single day’s tweeting.
“My wife Hannah definitely deserves her share of the credit for the fact that I haven’t missed a day,” he said.
The 33-year-old, of Neville Terrace, Durham City, most enjoyed tweeting the Psalms and the Apostle Paul’s letters to the Romans and Colossians.
He started Genesis with: “God created the heavens, the earth and everything that lives. He made humankind in his image, and gave them charge over the earth.”
The New Testament (Matthew 1) opened as: “The record of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham. Mary bore a son by the Holy Spirit. An angel told Joseph to name him Jesus.”
Mr Juby now plans to take a break from biblical tweeting, although he still wants to read a chapter a day and talks are underway to turn his tweets into a book.
