A LEARNER driver and instructor have been taken to hospital today following a head-on crash on a County Durham road.
The accident happened on the B6301 between Lanchester and Cornsay Colliery, at the junction for Wilks Hill, at around 3.30pm.
Durham Police said the collision involved the learner’s car, a black Ford Fiesta, and a white Mazda CX-7.
The driving instructor, a 49-year-old man, suffered serious chest and abdomen injuries and was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle by the Great North Air Ambulance.
The air ambulance doctor performed chest surgery on him at the scene.
Both drivers were taken to the University Hospital of North Durham, in Durham City.
Witnesses are asked to call Durham Police on 101.
