Fresh from a hugely successful loan spell at York City, David McGurk is back in the Darlington line-up this weekend not knowing where his future lies.

With skipper Matt Clarke suspended, McGurk will start against Wrexham tomorrow after returning to the club this week after his loan spell at York expired.

But the 23-year-old remains unsure whether he features in manager David Hodgson's long-term plans.

He said: "I will be going back to Darlington but I need to speak to the manager as soon as I can because he offered to pay me up earlier in the season. So I am wondering whether he does want me back."

Hodgson has yet to make a decision on McGurk's future, although the boss has already stated he would not stand in the way of the defender leaving.

That could pave the way for McGurk to return to York on a permanent basis.

Minstermen boss Billy McEwan is keen to re-sign the player, who was recently voted press and supporters player of the year for the Conference side.

"To be honest, I would prefer not to go back to Darlington and take things from there," said the defender. "I will be the third-choice centre half and, if they get in the play-offs, I'll be needed."

McGurk made two appearances for Quakers in January, before extending his loan spell at York until the end of the season.

Despite McGurk's return, Hodgson will be looking to his strikers as Quakers must beat Wrexham by a significant margin to stand any chance of reaching the play-offs.

Hodgson's men are three points behind seventh-placed Lincoln, but the Imps are on plus 12 goals scored, compared to Quakers' plus six.

Peterborough, in eighth, are level on points with Quakers, but also boast a superior record on plus ten.

"On the day anything can happen," said Hodgson. "All we can do is concentrate on beating Wrexham and who knows what might happen elsewhere else"
