ONE of the main car parks for shoppers in a North-East town centre has been closed after a section of road collapsed.
Northumbrian Water is investigating reports that a sewer collapsed beneath Crown Street, Darlington, earlier this morning.
The road was closed at the junction with Priestgate after a one metre wide hole appeared in the ground.
Access to the neighbouring Cornmill shopping centres 400-space multi-storey car park has been cut off. Darlington Borough Council staff are now working on setting up a diversion.
The incident is bad news for traders, who were looking forward to what was hoped to be one of the busiest days of the year, as the Christmas sales continue.
