Firefighters remain at the scene of a huge fire which broke out near Hartlepool this morning with residents assured they are continuously monitoring the situation.
Fire crews, police, and officers from the Environment Agency descended on Seaton Meadows landfill, Hartlepool, after a fire broke out at around 8 am this morning (Tuesday, January 23).
Nearby residents were warned to stay inside and keep windows and doors shut, and people have been asked to "avoid the area".
Cleveland Fire Brigade have tonight issued an update on the fire.
A spokesperson said: "We can confirm that the incident at Seaton Meadows Landfill Site is still ongoing and firefighters will remain at the scene throughout the night.
"If you see flames and smoke in the area, please be rest assured that we are aware and are continuously monitoring the situation.
"We are also working closely with our blue light colleagues and partner agencies.
"We still want to advise members of the public to avoid the area and all residents and businesses near to keep doors and windows closed and minimise time spent outside."
