Police could still be seen outside a North East property this evening (Friday, October 20) after a woman was taken to hospital and later died.

Officers attended Ivy Grove in Hartlepool after a woman died after being taken to the University Hospital of Hartlepool with serious injuries at about 5.30pm on Thursday (October 19).

A police presence remains at a property on the street in connection with the incident.

The Northern Echo:

A man has been arrested and remains in police custody.

A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: "Officers are investigating the unexplained death of a woman, who sadly died after being taken to the University Hospital of Hartlepool with serious injuries around 5.30pm on Thursday, October 19.

"The woman’s family have been informed and are being supported by officers, and our thoughts remain with them at this extremely difficult time.

"A man has been arrested and remains in police custody in connection with the incident.

The Northern Echo: "This incident is not being connected to any other and enquiries are continuing to establish the cause of the woman’s death."

Residents told The Northern Echo that a police presence in the area was not an uncommon sight and said they had been in the area since yesterday (Thursday) evening.

One resident on Ivy Grove said: "I don't really know what's going on at the minute.

The Northern Echo:

"She(the woman) was taken to hospital about 4pm to 4.30pm.

"About an hour or two later, the police turned up around the house.

"CSI came in, that's all I know up until now. Expect anything on this street."

Another Ivy Grove resident added: "All we've really seen is a couple of police cars going up and down the street.

"They asked us if we'd heard anything.

"We do get a few [police] out now and then.

"Everyone just keeps themselves to themselves to be honest."

"The police generally come here," another resident said.

The man said the incident was not the first instance of 'trouble' in the area.

"That's why I don't open the door," he added.
