A group of North East Jewish residents have staged a vigil in Durham calling for a 'stop to the slaughter in Gaza'.

They were in the Market Place and Durham Cathedral on Monday.

Their aim was to make it clear that protecting Jews at this difficult time does not have to mean supporting Israel’s war on Gaza.

They said the UK should work to de-escalate the situation, call for an immediate ceasefire and do everything it can to prevent further war crimes under international law.

Ms Tannenbaum said: "Ultimately, the cause of this violence is Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine.

"We must cease fire and negotiate for release of hostages and for a just resolution to the conflict.”
