Formal identification is yet to take place but next of kin have been notified and are currently being supported by specialist officers.
A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: "This is an extremely sad conclusion to an extensive investigation.
"Officers want to thank everyone who helped in the search by sharing appeals, searching the area and those who have phoned with possible sightings.
"Officers do not believe there to be any third party involvement and once formal identification has been completed a report will be prepared for the coroner."
