A total of 7 businesses across the North East have been slammed with the worst food hygiene ratings after the latest round of inspections.

Food hygiene scores from the Food Standards Agency show that a number of takeaways across the region have been told they need to make improvements.

Ratings are routinely carried out every few years across the whole country.

They are based on a range of factors from hygiene, safety, structural compliance and confidence in management.

Around the UK every restaurant, hospital, takeaway and cafe has to have inspections.

In the North East and North Yorkshire, the majority of takeaways and restaurants continue to receive a three and above rating.

But there are a number that have been identified which urgently need improvement.

What each hygiene rating means

0 - Urgent Improvement Necessary
1 - Major Improvement Necessary
2 - Some Improvement Necessary
3 - Hygiene Standards Generally Satisfactory
4 - Hygiene Standards Good
5 - Hygiene Standards Very Good
