A large-scale city centre disturbance has led to seven arrests after a man was slashed with a "bladed article" in the early hours of this morning (Sunday, June 18).
At around 4 am today (Sunday) police received reports a group of men were fighting on Newcastle's Grainger Street, near Slater’s Menswear and the junction with Westgate Road.
Three men were left injured in the fight.
A 20-year-old man was reportedly rushed to hospital after sustaining serious injuries consistent with being attacked by a bladed weapon. The young man remains in the hospital.
The other two other men, aged 25 and 21, also sustained injuries to their backs and faces during the altercation and were also taken to hospital.
An investigation was launched by officers from Northumbria Police and so far, seven men aged between 20 and 25 have been arrested and are currently in police custody.
Enquiries remain ongoing and officers will remain in the area today, carrying out additional patrols.
The area has also been cordoned off and the nearby Metro exit will remain closed at this time.
Officers are also keen to hear from any witnesses to the incident, or anyone who thinks they have information.
Superintendent Scott Cowie from Northumbria Police said: “This incident has left one man with serious injuries and I hope he manages to make a full recovery.
“Two other men have also sustained injuries, which we suspect were also caused with a bladed article.
“We are working round-the-clock to establish exactly what has happened and who is involved in this altercation and while enquiries are at an early stage, we have already arrested seven men.
