The North East is set to be struck with severe thunderstorms this Sunday (June 18) as the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning – here’s when it will hit.

Spanning across most of England and Wales, the warning will be in place for the whole of Sunday from 12am.

The warning covers the whole of the region and ends just before the Scottish border as the forecaster warns spray and sudden floods could lead to road closures.

There are also concerns that the storms could mean businesses and homes could be damaged by floodwater, lightning strikes and strong winds.

“However, some places could see 30 mm in an hour and 60mm in 6 hours, with the potential for frequent lightning, strong winds and hail. Where this occurs there is likely to be some disruption.

“While there is a high likelihood that thunderstorms will develop over England and Wales, there remains a large amount of uncertainty in exactly where these develop. This uncertainty is likely to remain even up to short lead times.”

This warning comes as the North East has experienced sky-high temperatures for the whole of this week, reaching up to 25 degrees in some places.
