A multi- car collision on the A1 saw the road closed for most of the afternoon, with tailbacks stretching for over four miles.
'A number of cars' collided on the A1 Northbound between junction 52 Catterick and junction 53 Scotch Corner.
National Highways said: "Traffic was stopped on the A1(M) northbound between J52 and J53 due to a serious collision. Emergency services were in attendeance and we had to implement a full road closure.

"The incident has now cleared and all lanes have re-opened. Long delays remain in the area but should now start to ease."
A spokesperson from North Yorkshire Police said: "We're dealing with a collision on the A1 Northbound between junction 52 Catterick and junction 53 Scotch Corner, involving a number of cars."
Currently, the status of those involved in the crash is unknown.
