A popular art shop will be leaving a Darlington shopping centre after nearly five years at the location.

Creative Space in Darlington announced yesterday (April 4) they will be leaving Cornmill Shopping Centre after close to five years serving the town's residents.

The business said they would be leaving Unit 8 in the shopping centre after the new owners asked them "to vacate the premises immediately."

The business said they hope to have a reopening soon and will be keeping customers up-to-date on any changes.

In a statement online, a Creative Space spokesperson said: "It is with a heavy heart that we are writing this post.

"After nearly five years in the Cornmill Centre, the new owners have asked us to vacate the premises immediately.

"I hope you will continue on the journey with us, wherever that may take us.

"If you would like to be kept updated please let us know below or keep an eye out for us. We hope to update you with a re-opening soon."

Meanwhile, the store included a statement on a note outside their shop in the centre, thanking their patrons for their encouragement and support.

It said: "After nearly five years and the support of East Street Arts we have been asked by the new owners of the Cornmill to vacate immediately.

"The Creative Space's artists thank you for your encouragement, patronage and friendship.

"The artists have grown, gained strength and formed a community.

"I hope you will continue on the journey with us, wherever the path takes us next."

Residents reacted to the news online with a mixture of sadness and hope the business lands on its feet.

In a social media post, one resident said: "So sorry to hear this, very sad. I hope you find somewhere else I will definitely visit the new space where ever it maybe."

Another heartbroken resident said: "You'll be missed. Hope you soon find new premises. Was planning to visit you on Thursday."

While another resident said: "That's sad, hope you can find a new place."
