A popular hotel has it has shut down for good, only a few weeks after news broke that it was cancelling weddings and events.

Judges Hotel, in Yarm, has been the subject of speculation for the last few weeks after they cancelled future events - and the hotel’s online booking system had no rooms available beyond March 3.

In a statement on social media, the Hotel confirmed that it had finally closed its doors on Sunday, March 5.

Some of the couples who have had weddings cancelled by the venue have confirmed that they have received refunds.

A spokesperson for the Judges Hotel said: "Unfortunately, judges Hotel closed on March 5, 2023.

"We would like to thank all our customers for their patronage while we were operating, and of course to all our staff, who have done an amazing job for us."

The venue, which described itself as a "luxury" hotel for weddings, stopped taking bookings last week, prompting speculation online.

One couple, Katy Scanlon and Andrew Smith, have been left scrabbling after their wedding was cancelled only six weeks ahead of the big day.

An email sent to a couple was seen by The Northern Echo two weeks ago. It said Judges "is in the process of being sold to a new company in the coming weeks" which meant the hotel was "not able to fulfil wedding bookings".

The Northern Echo understands that multiple offers have been made to purchase the hotel, which has been owned by the Downs family since 1989.

It appears as though a sale has now gone through, as the Yarm country hotel closed over the weekend.
