Officers are issuing crime prevention advice following keyless vehicle thefts which resulted in two Range Rovers being stolen.

One theft occurred last night, Tuesday, February 21, on Lord Close in Middlesbrough and the other occurred in the early hours of this morning, Wednesday, February 22, on Butts Lane in Eaglescliffe.

There are steps that owners can take that could help prevent them from becoming victims of keyless vehicles thefts such as:

• A good quality disc steering lock which is Thatcham-approved is a great visual deterrent to a thief.

• Ask your car dealer about the digital features in your vehicle. Have there been any software updates you can take advantage of?

• Check if your keyless entry fob can be turned off at night and do so if possible. Your car dealer will be able to confirm this.

• Store your fob in a Secured by Design approved key shield. Keeping your fob out of sight is not enough. Consider purchasing a fob blocking bag, such as a Faraday bag (ensure they are bought from a reputable source).

• When parking your vehicle consider using a car park with the Safer Parking Award, signified by a blue tick symbol. When returning to your car, be aware of your surroundings and who is hanging around.
