An appeal has been launched after a group threatened staff at a popular takeaway with a hammer before making off with a till last week.

Police are appealing for more information after a number of offenders threatened two staff members with a hammer at a Subway in Battle Hill, Wallsend last Wednesday (January 18).

Meanwhile, Northumbria Police said they received a report of the robbery at 5:05pm, after the group stole a till from the store and fled on foot.

They confirmed no staff members physically injured during the incident, though had been left shaken by the event.

Detective Sergeant Lisa Henderson, of Northumbria Police, said: “This is an appalling offence and we are determined to trace those responsible and bring them to justice.

“I would like to thank the staff members who’ve shown great bravery ever since the incident.

“This criminality will not be tolerated and I am asking the public to come forward and assist our investigation. A number of enquiries have been carried out over the last week following this incident.

“If you saw anything suspicious in the area, please let us know. Your information could prove crucial to our enquiries.”

A full investigation has been launched into the robbery and officers are now asking anyone with information to come forward.
