A MAN has died following an 'explosion' in a suspected industrial accident today.
Police confirmed they were called to Prospect Row, at Sunderland Dock, at 9.50am, where they are investigating the death of a man.
Residents in the area are reported to have heard a 'loud bang' coming from the Port of Sunderland.
A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “At 9.50am police were made aware that a man had died in a suspected industrial accident on Prospect Row, at Sunderland Docks.
“Inquiries into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing but the health and safety executive have been informed.
“A cordon is currently in place and there is not believed to be any further risk to the public.”
A spokesperson for the Health and Safety Executive, said: "HSE is aware of the incident and working alongside police, who are in the lead of this investigation."
The North East Ambulance Service, dispatched sent a hazard area response team and two double-crewed ambulances.
