WORLD-renowned organ builders turned their skills to a tiny plastic model today (Wednesday, November 11).

Experts from Harrison and Harrison - more used to working on huge instruments for the likes of Westminster Abbey, King’s College, Cambridge and London’s Southbank Centre - helped construct a miniature organ to go into a Lego model of Durham Cathedral.

The Meadowfield-based firm rebuilt the original, made by Henry Willis in 1876, in 1905 and again in 1978.

The Lego cathedral is raising money for the £10m Open Treasure project, with each of the 350,000 bricks costing £1.

Harrison and Harrison has made a donation the cause and staff visited the cathedral to piece the plastic bricks together.

Christopher Bachelor, from the firm, said: “We are pleased to be involved in this important and prestigious project and are delighted to support the cathedral as it moves forward with its Open Treasure project.

“Our rebuilding of the Willis Organ was a milestone in the history of the firm and we are proud to have looked after this highly-regarded instrument for over a century.”

Gaye Kirby, the cathedral’s head of development, said: “It is wonderful that Harrison’s have chosen to recreate their magnificent organ in miniature in our Lego cathedral and we’re very grateful for them for their generous donation and support of the Open Treasure appeal.”

Open Treasure will create world-class exhibition space, transforming the cathedral visitor experience. For more information, visit durhamcathedral.co.uk/donate
