THE FATE of a dog that joined in a savage attack on its owner remains in the balance.
Police said a decision had yet to be made on what to do with one of two American bulldogs that turned on Stephen Potts, trying to rip off his arm.
The 47-year-old of Low Pittington, near Durham City, remains in a serious condition in hospital following the attack in neighbouring High Pittington, on Sunday evening.
Bystanders used golf clubs, umbrellas and spades in a desperate bid to fend off the two dogs, which eventually ran away.
Police said after the attack it was necessary, for reasons of public safety, for police firearms officers to humanely destroy one of the dogs.
The other dog was captured at the scene and taken to police kennels.
A police spokesman said: “We have not yet made a decision with regard to the other dog. We continue to consult with his family.
“Whatever decision is taken public safety will be the top priority.”
Policed have carried out an assessment and concluded that several remaining dogs are being cared for appropriately and are not considered banned breeds under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.
