A MARKET town's Post Office branch is to be given a new look with longer opening hours.

As part of a national Post Office modernisation programme, the Barnard Castle branch, in Galgate, will be given an open-plan makeover with five serving positions.

The branch will also open for an extra hour every Saturday once work is completed.

However, officials say the branch will have to close from 5.30pm on Monday, October 14, to 1pm on Wednesday, October 23, so the work can take place.

During the closure, customers will have to make their way to Cotherstone or Gainford if they require Post Office services.

Suzanne Richardson, Post Office regional network manager, said: “We are confident this new modern service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.

“The modernisation is part of a major investment programme to convert the Post Office network to new-style branches.

“This investment marks a commitment to no more branch closure programmes,” she added.
