POLICE are appealing for witnesses after cars were set on fire.
At just after 1am today (Tuesday, August 6) police received a report that three cars - a Nissan Micra, Ford Fiesta and Renault Clio – were ablaze in Chester Crescent, Sunderland.
At this stage the fires are being treated as arson.
Neighbourhood Inspector Mick Hall said: "At this stage it doesn't appear the cars have been specifically targeted and we believe this has been mindless damage, which has obviously caused anger and frustration for the owners.
"Extra patrols are being carried out in the area to reassure residents and gather information. Everything is being done to find the person responsible.
“I'd urge any witnesses or anyone with information about the fires to get in touch as soon as possible."
Anyone with information is asked to call Northumbria Police on 101, extension 69191, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555-111.
