A SUSPECTED burglar was found using an iPad tracking app minutes after a terrifying raid on a family home.

A female occupant of a house in Castle Hill, Middleham, near Leyburn, North Yorkshire, woke at about 5.10am this morning (Monday, June 24) to find a man in her bedroom.

The burglar ran off but the family found their car - an Audi A3 - as well as an iPad, television and laptop had been stolen.

Police arrived and were able to trace the iPad using a tracking app installed on the device to the garden of a nearby holiday home.

A 34-year-old man from Sunderland was arrested on suspicion of burglary and theft at the scene.

The stolen electrics were found inside the property and the car was later found nearby in Middleham.

Tony Hewson, from the racing town's Central Stores, went to the aid of the occupants after the burglary.

He said: “The man pulled up at the shop and said they had just been robbed. We had a quick whizz around but we couldn't see anything.

“When we got back to the house the police were there and they were able to log on and track the iPad. The man was stood in the garden. He claimed he had just found it.

“To be fair to the police it was done and dusted in less than an hour.”

It is understood a hen party had been staying at the holiday home where the man was arrested.

PC Dave Cousins, from Leyburn Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “I need to speak to anyone who may have seen people acting in a suspicious manner in the local area around the time of the burglary and ask them to get in touch.”

The suspect remained in custody on Monday afternoon.
