CAMPAIGNERS trying to save a threatened town centre post office have called a public meeting.

As reported in The Northern Echo, The Post Office is considering closing Stockton’s Crown post office, on the High Street.

Stockton’s Post Office would be one of 70 franchised across the country and the idea would be go into partnership with other retailers to maximise profits, possibly staying in the same building but with other shops.

However the Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) say jobs, including the 16 at Stockton, would be lost and services compromised.

David Bowmaker, territorial representative for the CWU said: “Stockton Crown Post Office is a valuable asset to the town and is relied upon by local residents and businesses.

"The staff in Stockton are well-trained and have 290 years of experience between them which could be lost under the company’s plans to close this office and find what it calls a retail partner.”

The meeting will be held at Stockton Town Hall, High Street, Stockton, at 7pm on Friday, June 14. Alex Cunningham, MP for Stockton North, will speak. Managers from Post Office Ltd have been invited to attend.
