The body of a man was found by police in the River Tees at Stockton this afternoon.

It was discovered on the west shore near Quayside Road at about 1.05pm.

A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said that police divers were in the area at the time as part of the search for missing Tanveer Ahmed, who was reported missing last month.

Investigations are underway to determine an identity and cause of death.

Mr Ahmed went missing from Yarm Lane, Stockton, in the early hours of March 24 and was last seen on CCTV footage in Riverside Road at about 4am.

Police divers have already made several searches of the river in an attempt to trace Mr Ahmed.
